The City of Belleville initiated a City-Owned Land Inventory Review as part of the City’s successful Housing Accelerator Fund application. The goal is to equip Council and the municipality with the necessary information to effectively manage and potentially utilize any surplus lands within the inventory. The City-Owned Land Inventory Review aims to identify surplus lands for potential housing development, directly addressing Belleville's affordable housing demand and promoting efficient land use for the community's benefit.
The City of Belleville’s Official Plan outlines a comprehensive strategy for managing land use patterns, with a strong focus on addressing evolving housing needs.
The City of Belleville’s urban boundary encompasses 4,087 hectares of land, which consists of both public and privately owned parcels.
The City owns and maintains 327 parcels of real property covering 745 hectares including parkland, open space, stormwater management facilities, parking lots, trails, and vacant lands.
Belleville’s land inventory review received a hands-on approach, as each property parcel was assessed using GIS aerial imagery and key policy documents to guide the land identification process.
The project serves as a guide for further investigation and Council consideration, addressing key challenges like the demand for affordable housing and efficient land use into the future.
