The Ministry of Transportation is undertaking a procurement-ready study for improvements to Highway 401 from 1km west of the Wallbridge-Loyalist Road interchange to 5 km east of the Highway 37 interchange in Belleville, as per the Recommended Plan detailed in the Transportation Environmental Study Report that was approved in 2021 in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities, 2000. The Recommended Plan includes:

  • Interim widening of Highway 401 from four to six lanes, and an ultimate widening from six to eight lanes;
  • Replacement of all bridges within the project limits;
  • Operational improvements and reconfiguration of the Wallbridge-Loyalist Road, Highway 62 and Highway 37 interchanges;
  • Active transportation improvements at the Wallbridge-Loyalist Road, Sidney Street, Highway 62 and Highway 37 underpasses;
  • New carpool lots at the Highway 62 and Highway 37 interchanges; and
  • Drainage, stormwater management and illumination improvements.
